Hey, Fellow Dad,

Proverbs 23:26 instructs a son to “give” his heart to his father and to let his eyes “observe” his father’s ways. What a beautiful picture of an ideal father-son relationship!

We all hope our kids can emulate us. But are you, as a dad, intentionally leading your children to want to have that kind of relationship with you?

In this episode, my wife Kristin joined me to talk about a simple way for parents and children to build a weekly routine of one-on-one times together. (We also had an unexpected appearance by our two-year old son.)

– Nathan

Scriptures

Proverbs 23:26 “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.”

Books Mentioned

📖 Horton Hatches the Egg, by Dr. Seuss

📖 English Literature for Boys and Girls, by H.E. Marshall

📖 My Book House (series long out of print) (at least one of these books contains an inappropriate—albeit cartoonish—illustration)

📖 Adventures of An Arctic Missionary (three-book series), by Gloria Repp

📖 81 Days Below Zero, by Brian Murphy (This book requires some censorship if reading with children, and I felt that the author included a good bit of material that was not necessary to the storyline and even distracted from the plot. The parts about the plane crash and the airman’s survival, however, were inspiring.)

📖 The Overland Escape, by Lee Roddy

📖 Mustang: Spirit of the Wild West, by Marguerite Henry (this book, as others by this author, contains some swear words or minced oaths)

📖 Brighty of the Grand Canyon, by Marguerite Henry

📖 Derwood, Inc., by Jerri Massi

📖 Cars and Trucks and Things That Go and What Do People Do All Day by Richard Scarry

Key Thoughts

  • Do dads have an implied responsibility in our children giving us their hearts and observing our ways?
  • Dads, spend time with all your children and be sure to spend time with each of your children.
  • Keep daddy times light and fun, drawing your children’s hearts to your own, causing them to want to give you their hearts.
  • Workable processes may take years to develop. None of us are really experts. Allow yourself to make mistakes as you progress in growing, asking God for wisdom all the while.

Quotes

  • “Sometimes it’s hard not to read ahead ourselves.”—Kristin
  • “I don’t have a heart…I don’t.”–BC, our 2-year old, who walked in to our recording of this episode.
  • Nathan: “And what do you like to do for daddy time?” BC: “Big high boots…” (quote from “Great American Cowboy” performed by the singing cowboy trio, Sons of San Joachin)
